How to see blue fire

Ijen Crater Volcano, on the island of Java, Indonesia has two of the most unusual events on Earth. The first is active solfatara which emits hot and flammable sulfur gas. These are lit when they enter the Earth’s oxygen-rich atmosphere and burn with electric blue flames. Some gases condense in the atmosphere to produce a stream of liquid sulfur which also burns with an electric blue fire. The fire is difficult to see during the day but it illuminates the landscape at night.

The second incident is a caldera lake one kilometer wide filled with turquoise water. The color of water is the result of extreme acidity and high concentrations of dissolved metals. This is the largest highly acidic lake in the world with a pH measured as low as 0.5. The cause of acidity is the flow of hydrothermal water filled with gas from the hot magma chamber below.
