Kawah Ijen is famous for several reasons:

🌋 What Is the Blue Fire?

The blue fire is caused by sulfuric gases that ignite upon contact with oxygen at temperatures up to 600°C (1,112°F). These flames can reach heights of up to 5 meters. The phenomenon occurs naturally from cracks in the volcano’s surface and is best viewed between 2:00 AM – 4:00 AM before sunrise.

Alongside the flames, you’ll also witness molten red sulfur flowing and cooling into brilliant yellow solid forms—then harvested by local miners.

🚐 How to Get to Kawah Ijen from Bali

Your journey begins in Bali, where our Ijen Expedition Tour team will pick you up from:

You’ll travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle to Gilimanuk Harbor, on the western tip of Bali, and then take a 1-hour ferry across to Ketapang Harbor, Banyuwangi in East Java.

Important Time Note: Java uses WIB (Western Indonesian Time), which is 1 hour behind Bali time.

🥾 The Ijen Hiking Experience

From Paltuding Basecamp, you’ll begin your hike around 1:00 AM. The trek to the crater rim takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, passing through scenic forest paths and volcanic terrain.

From the rim, a 45-minute descent into the crater (with gas masks provided) will bring you to the Blue Fire zone. After enjoying the mesmerizing flames, you’ll hike back up in time for a breathtaking sunrise overlooking the sulfur lake.

The lake is approximately 200 meters deep, with a pH level of around 0.5, making it one of the most acidic bodies of water in the world. You’ll also see remnants of a historic Dutch-era dam built to control the overflow of crater water.
