How the Ijen Crater Tour from Ubud Works

Your journey starts in Bali. Our English-speaking driver will pick you up from Ubud, Kuta, Sanur, Denpasar, or other locations around 6:00 PM. From there, you’ll drive around 4 hours to Gilimanuk Harbour, located on the western tip of Bali.

At Gilimanuk, you’ll take a 1-hour ferry ride to Ketapang Harbour in Banyuwangi, East Java (note: Java time is one hour behind Bali).

From Ketapang, the drive continues for about 1–1.5 hours to Paltuding Basecamp, the starting point for the Ijen hike. Along the way, you’ll pass rice fields, villages, and one of the last remaining primary rainforests in Java, surrounded by volcanoes.

At 1:30 AM, the hike begins. It takes around 1.5 hours to cover the 3 km trail on a well-maintained path with a moderate incline. Once you reach the crater rim, our guide will provide gas masks before leading you down into the crater to witness the spectacular Blue Fire up close.

Afterwards, you’ll hike back to the rim to watch the sunrise over the turquoise crater lake, a view that travellers describe as unforgettable.

By around 7:00 AM, you’ll descend to the parking area, enjoy a local breakfast, then return to Ketapang Harbour for the ferry back to Bali. Finally, you’ll arrive at your hotel in Ubud or other Bali locations by 3:00–4:00 PM.
