Mount Bromo

Mt. Bromo volcano in East Java is the active cone inside the giant Tengger caldera. It is one of Indonesia’s most scenic destinations, world-famous for its magnificent sunrise views and the stunning panorama over the caldera with the majestic Semeru volcano commanding the background.

Kawah Ijen

Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen Volcano, located on the island of Java, features two of the most unusual natural occurrences on Earth. The first is its active solfataras, which emit hot, flammable sulfurous gases. These gases ignite as they enter Earth’s oxygen-rich atmosphere, burning with a striking electric blue flame. Some of the gas condenses to produce flows of molten sulfur, which also burn with an ethereal blue flame.

The second spectacular phenomenon is a one-kilometer-wide caldera lake filled with turquoise-blue water. The distinct color is the result of extreme acidity and a high concentration of dissolved metals. It is the world’s largest highly acidic lake, with a measured pH as low as 0.5. This intense acidity is caused by an inflow of hydrothermal waters charged with gases from a hot magma chamber sitting below.

Mount Bromo Ijen Crater Detailed Itinerary

Day 01. Malang / Surabaya (Airport/Hotel) – Cemoro Lawang

We will pick you up at your hotel or the airport in Malang/Surabaya. From there, we will drive for approximately four hours to the scenic village of Cemoro Lawang. We will overnight in the Bromo area, staying at a hotel that overlooks the beautiful landscape and the iconic Mount Bromo volcano.

Day 02. Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour – Ijen Area | Mount Bromo Ijen Crater

You will be woken up at 03:00 AM to enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea before we depart for a short 40-minute drive to Penanjakan, the highest viewpoint in the area, to witness the spectacular sunrise. Please note that catching the sunrise depends entirely on local weather conditions. Afterward, we will descend to the Sea of Sand to visit the rim of Mount Bromo’s crater.

We will then return to the hotel to enjoy breakfast. After checking out, we continue our journey with a 4-hour drive to Pasir Putih Beach for lunch at a beachside restaurant.

Following lunch, we drive for another 3 hours to reach the village of Sempol or Blawan in the Ijen area, where you will spend the night. You will have plenty of free time to explore the beautiful surroundings, relax at the hotel, or visit the nearby local hot springs.

Day 03. Ijen Trekking – Ketapang Harbour / Bali / Surabaya | Mount Bromo Ijen Crater

At around 01:00 AM, the Ijen Expedition team will drive you to the Mount Ijen parking area (Paltuding), which takes about 50 minutes from your hotel. This scenic drive winds through a lush Arabica coffee plantation. Upon arrival at the parking area, you will begin the trek to Ijen Crater, which takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail spans about 3 km to an elevation of 2,386m. Once at the top, you can marvel at the stunning electric blue fire and the massive acid lake.

After enjoying the sunrise, the Ijen Expedition team will guide you back down to the parking area. Along the way, you can take in the panoramic mountain views and meet the local sulfur miners. You will arrive back at the parking lot in about an hour, where you can unwind with hot coffee or tea. Afterward, we will drive you to Ketapang Harbour (for Bali transfer), Surabaya, or back to Malang, bringing this unforgettable tour program to an end.
