🔥 What is the Ijen Blue Fire?

The blue fire of Ijen Crater is a rare natural phenomenon. It occurs when sulfuric gases, emerging from cracks in the volcano at temperatures up to 600°C (1,112°F), ignite upon contact with air. These flames can reach up to 5 meters high and glow blue due to the high combustion temperature.

Molten sulfur, initially deep red, flows through ceramic pipes and cools into bright yellow crystals. Sulfur miners extract these crystals daily, carrying 75–90 kg loads up steep paths to the crater rim—an extraordinary human effort.
