Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival 2025: A Grand Celebration of Culture and Spirituality

Have you ever been to a festival that left you speechless? That’s exactly how I felt at the Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival 2025 in East Java, Indonesia.

I didn’t know what to expect before going. I had seen a few videos online — bright costumes, traditional dances, and smiling crowds. But nothing prepared me for the real thing. It was more than a parade — it was a beautiful mix of culture, spirituality, and creativity.

What Is the Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival?

The Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival (BEC) is an annual cultural festival held in the city of Banyuwangi. It’s one of the most famous festivals in Indonesia, known for its incredible fashion parades, colorful costumes, and traditional music.

Each year, the event brings together hundreds of performers — mostly students and local artists — who dress in amazing ethnic outfits inspired by Banyuwangi’s culture and myths. The 2025 theme was “Simpul Budaya dan Spiritual Kehidupan,” which means “The Knot of Culture and Spiritual Life.”

And yes, it was as magical as it sounds.

The Parade: Culture on the Streets

As the carnival began, the main street of Banyuwangi turned into a giant open-air runway. People gathered early to find the best viewing spots. The crowd was a mix of locals, domestic tourists, and international visitors — all excited to witness the show.

The costumes were breathtaking — think giant wings, glowing masks, batik patterns, and mythical creatures. Some performers wore outfits that took months to design and build. And they didn’t just walk — they danced, posed, and told stories through movement.

One of the highlights was the opening performance by Puteri Indonesia, who joined the parade in a glamorous traditional outfit. The energy was electric.

What Makes BEC So Special?

This festival isn’t just about showing off costumes. It’s about identity. Banyuwangi has a rich cultural heritage, especially from the Osing tribe, and the carnival is a creative way to keep traditions alive, while also letting the younger generation express themselves.

What I loved most was the mix of old and new. Traditional music played alongside modern sound systems. Ancient myths were turned into modern performance art. Even the floats had LED lights and eco-friendly materials.

It was clear: this town is proud of its culture, and the world should see it.

Tips for Visiting BEC in the Future

If you’re thinking of coming to BEC 2026, here are a few tips from my experience:

• Arrive early: The streets get crowded fast. Come at least 2 hours before the parade starts.

• Bring a camera: You’ll want to capture every detail. This is a photographer’s dream.

• Stay hydrated: Banyuwangi can be hot and humid, especially during big events.

• Explore more: Don’t just come for the carnival. Visit Mount Ijen, the blue fire, or the beaches nearby like Pulau Merah.
