Mount Ijen’s temperature before sunrise can be surprisingly cold. In the early morning (around 01:00–05:00 AM), temperatures typically range between 8–12°C (46–53°F) from November to May. During the dry season (June to October), it can drop even further to 0–8°C (32–46°F), especially at the summit and near the crater rim.

The cold temperature is intensified by strong mountain winds, making it feel several degrees lower than the actual reading. Wearing a proper jacket, long pants, gloves, and a hat is highly recommended for the midnight trek.
As the sun rises, the weather becomes much more comfortable. By late morning and afternoon, temperatures usually increase to around 22–25°C (71–77°F), creating ideal conditions for enjoying the panoramic views of the turquoise crater lake.
Preparing for the cold ensures a safer and more enjoyable Ijen Blue Fire experience.

What Should You Wear During a Mount Ijen Tour?
For a Mount Ijen midnight hike, wearing proper layered clothing is essential. We recommend long trousers, thick socks, closed hiking shoes, a comfortable shirt, and a warm jacket or layered sweaters.
Keep in mind that you will hike uphill for approximately one hour. While temperatures are cold at the start, your body will gradually warm up during the ascent. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust comfortably as conditions change.
The Best Time to Visit Ijen Crater | Mount Ijen
The best time to visit Mount Ijen is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to early November. During these months, rainfall is minimal, the hiking trail is safer and less slippery, and visibility at the crater rim is generally clearer. These conditions make it ideal for enjoying the famous blue fire phenomenon and the panoramic view of the turquoise crater lake.
Worst Time to Visit
The rainy season usually occurs from late December to March. During this period, rainfall can be frequent and sometimes lasts from morning until night. The trail may become muddy and more challenging, and visibility at the summit can be reduced due to thick fog and clouds.
Although it is still possible to visit during the rainy season, weather conditions are less predictable, and the overall experience may not be as optimal as during the dry months.
What You Can See at Mount Ijen
1. The Blue Fire Phenomenon
The Blue Fire of Ijen is a rare natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gases emerging from volcanic vents. When these gases come into contact with oxygen at high temperatures, they burn with an electric-blue flame.
This phenomenon is only visible in complete darkness, which is why the hike typically starts around 01:00–02:00 AM. After reaching the crater rim, visitors must descend approximately 700–800 meters into the crater to witness the blue flames up close.
Because of the high concentration of sulfur gases, wearing a proper gas mask is mandatory during the descent. The experience is intense, dramatic, and unlike anything else in Indonesia.
2. The Acidic Crater Lake
Mount Ijen is home to one of the most extraordinary volcanic lakes in the world. Known locally as Kawah Ijen, it is recognized as the largest highly acidic volcanic lake on Earth.
Crater size: approximately 960 meters × 600 meters
Depth: around 200 meters
Acidity level: pH < 0.5 (extremely acidic, comparable to battery acid)
The lake’s striking turquoise color may look beautiful and inviting, but it is highly corrosive and dangerous. Direct contact with the water can cause skin irritation and burns. Visitors should never attempt to touch the lake.
The best time to descend toward the crater lake is between 04:00 AM and 09:00 AM, before the wind shifts. After around 10:00 AM, sulfuric gases often blow toward the trekking path, reducing visibility and making the climb more challenging.
3. Sunrise at the Crater Rim
After witnessing the blue fire, hikers return to the crater rim to watch the sunrise. As daylight appears, the full scale of the volcanic landscape becomes visible — dramatic cliffs, sulfur deposits, and the turquoise acidic lake below.
On clear days, you may also see panoramic views stretching toward the surrounding mountains of East Java. The contrast between the golden sunrise and the blue-green crater lake creates one of the most photogenic moments of the entire tour.
4. The Sulfur Miners of Ijen
Since 1968, Kawah Ijen has operated as an active sulfur mining site. During your hike, you will encounter local miners carrying heavy baskets of solid sulfur along the steep volcanic trail.
Each load can weigh up to 70–90 kilograms (150–200 pounds), carried manually from the crater floor to the weighing station. Despite being one of the most physically demanding jobs in Indonesia, many miners choose this work because it offers higher daily income compared to farming in nearby villages.
Their presence adds a powerful human dimension to the Mount Ijen experience, reminding visitors that this is not only a natural wonder but also a working volcanic landscape.
