Sulfur Mining at the Edge of a Ijen Volcano

Deep inside East Java’s Mount Ijen, men risk their lives for chunks of yellow stone sulfur, harvested from the heart of a living volcano.
At the Edge of Earth’s Fury
Imagine working beside a boiling acid lake. The air is thick with toxic gases, your lungs burn, your eyes sting, and every breath feels like it could be your last. This is not a scene from a science fiction film—it’s the daily reality for sulfur miners at Kawah Ijen, an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia.
By the edge of its gaping crater, surrounded by thick smoke and searing heat, dozens of miners extract raw sulfur from the earth’s core with nothing but iron rods and sheer endurance.

Why Sulfur? Why Here?
Sulfur, a bright yellow mineral used in fertilizers, matches, and chemical products, occurs naturally around volcanic vents. Kawah Ijen is one of the few places on Earth where sulfur is still mined by hand.
When volcanic gases escape through underground pipes, they are directed through ceramic tubes to condense into molten sulfur. This liquid hardens as it cools, forming bright yellow deposits that miners shatter, collect, and carry.
Life on the Crater’s Edge
Miners begin their journey long before sunrise. They hike nearly 3 kilometres up the mountain, then descend 300 meters into the toxic crater—without modern safety gear. Most wear only simple scarves or makeshift masks.
Using metal bars, they break apart the hardened sulfur and load it into bamboo baskets that can weigh up to 90 kilograms (200 pounds). Then, they climb out of the crater and haul the load several kilometers downhill.
The reward for this backbreaking labor? Around $10 to $13 USD per day.

The Human Cost of Yellow Gold
Many miners suffer long-term health effects: damaged lungs, skin burns, and chronic back pain. Few can afford healthcare. Their life expectancy is often reduced by decades due to prolonged exposure to sulfur dioxide gas.
Still, the work continues—because the mine, harsh as it is, remains one of the few reliable sources of income for local families. For generations, fathers have passed this dangerous job down to their sons.
Tourism Meets Labor
Tourists from around the world trek to Kawah Ijen to witness the famed blue fire—a rare natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gas. In doing so, many also encounter the miners and capture their photographs.
While tourism has brought visibility to their plight, it has not always brought fair compensation. Ethical travel matters: respect miners, ask before taking photos, and support local initiatives that give back to the community.
What You Can Do
If you plan to visit Kawah Ijen:
-
Hire local guides who collaborate with and support miners.
-
Buy sulfur souvenirs made by miners (many craft small sculptures).
-
Donate safety gear or masks via trusted organizations.
-
Raise awareness by sharing their stories with respect and consent.
Conclusion: Courage in the Crater
Sulfur mining at the edge of a volcano is not just a job—it’s a test of human strength, endurance, and survival. The miners of Kawah Ijen stand as silent figures in a brutal landscape, their lives interwoven with the fire beneath their feet.
