🗻 The Ijen Crater

The Ijen Plateau is a vast volcanic highland area that includes Mount Ijen, Mount Raung, Mount Suket, Mount Merapi, and several smaller peaks. Its main attraction is the Ijen Crater Lake, a surreal turquoise lake perched on a dormant volcano at 2,383m above sea level.

The lake’s unique blue-green colour comes from dissolved sulfur, contrasting with the reddish-brown volcanic rocks that surround it. Hiking to Ijen usually starts at Paltuding, with a 3 km (about 90 minutes) trek uphill through a forest trail.

At night, travellers can witness the mysterious Blue Fire—a natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gas that creates bright blue flames, visible only in a few places on Earth.

🌋 Mount Bromo

Standing at 2,392m, Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanoes and part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The volcano is set in a dramatic landscape of the Sea of Sand, a vast plain of volcanic ash encircled by the towering cliffs of the Tengger caldera.
