Kawah Ijen Volcano – Blue Fire & Acidic Crater Lake Guide

Kawah Ijen Volcano (2,386 m) – The World’s Largest Acidic Crater Lake
Kawah Ijen Volcano, standing at 2,386 meters above sea level, is an active stratovolcano located in the eastern part of Java Island, Indonesia. It is globally recognized for hosting the largest natural acidic crater lake in the world, containing approximately 27.5 million cubic meters of striking turquoise-colored water.
The crater lake is considered the largest reservoir of hot and highly acidic water on Earth. With a pH level that can drop below 0.3 (on a scale of 0–14, where 7 is neutral), the lake is more acidic than lemon juice (pH 2) and close to the acidity of battery acid (pH 1).
Geological Features & Blue Fire Phenomenon

Electric-blue sulfur flames visible before sunrise at Kawah Ijen crater.
In the southern section of the crater, volcanic fumaroles continuously emit sulfur-rich gases. During the night, these gases ignite upon contact with oxygen, producing the world-famous “Blue Fire” phenomenon.
This rare natural event occurs when sulfuric gases emerge at high temperatures and burn, creating electric-blue flames that can reach several meters in height under optimal conditions. Kawah Ijen is one of the only places on Earth where this phenomenon can be observed directly.
On the western side of the crater, a dam was constructed more than a century ago to regulate water flow into the Banyu Pahit River.
Environmental Impact & Banyupahit River
The extreme acidity of the crater lake significantly affects downstream ecosystems. The Banyupahit River, originating from the lake, carries acidic water toward agricultural regions.
According to scientific research, the river water used by local farmers for irrigation has recorded pH levels between 2.5 and 3.5. For comparison, the normal pH range for stream water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, is approximately 6 to 8.
This unique chemistry makes Kawah Ijen not only a tourism destination but also an important subject of geological and environmental studies.
Kawah Ijen Volcano Location
Kawah Ijen lies on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency in East Java, Indonesia. The volcano belongs to the Ijen volcanic complex and is classified as a stratovolcano.
Its accessible location from Banyuwangi makes it one of Indonesia’s most visited volcanic sites.

Eruption History
Kawah Ijen remains an active volcano. The last recorded magmatic eruption occurred in 1817.
Since then, several phreatic eruptions have been documented, including events in:
1796, 1917, 1936, 1950, 1952, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Although most of these eruptions caused limited damage, they highlight the importance of safety regulations for visitors and sulfur miners.

Traditional Sulfur Mining
One of the most distinctive aspects of Kawah Ijen is its traditional sulfur mining activity.
Molten sulfur emerges in deep red form from ceramic pipes installed by miners. As it cools, it solidifies into bright yellow deposits. Miners break the sulfur into large chunks and transport loads weighing between 75 to 90 kilograms up steep slopes of 45–60 degrees to the crater rim.
They then carry the sulfur approximately 3 kilometers down the mountain for weighing. Many miners complete this demanding journey twice per day.

Traditional sulfur miners collect solidified sulfur from the crater floor.
Despite the harsh conditions, sulfur mining remains a primary source of income for many local families.
Blue Fire Visibility & Conditions
The intensity and height of the blue flames depend on volcanic gas pressure, wind conditions, and oxygen availability. While flames have occasionally been observed reaching up to five meters in height, visibility varies nightly.
Regardless of intensity, witnessing the blue fire at Kawah Ijen remains a rare and unforgettable experience for visitors.

Visiting Kawah Ijen
Due to volcanic activity and safety considerations, access to the crater and blue fire area is subject to official regulations and daily assessments.
Visitors are strongly advised to:
-
Use proper gas masks
-
Follow licensed local guides
-
Check current access status before planning a hike
For those planning a visit, organized tours from Banyuwangi typically operate as either midnight (blue fire) hikes or sunrise crater hikes.
